GCSE Maths Exam - Preparation Advice for March 2nd

All students in Year 10, Year 9 classes 9A1 (Mr Pye), 9B1 (Mr Harrison), 9A2 (Mrs Brace), 9B2 (Mr Littleton) and Year 11 Resit students should be revising at home for at least 2-3 hours per week now and every week up and until March 2nd (remember there will be some payback of time after the exam as homework for year 9 and 10 students will cease for 2-3 weeks after the exam, sorry year 11 you still need to practice for your next exam on Unit 3 topics so homework will still be a regular feature of your lessons).  To help you revise there are several things you should use and have available as resources:

1.  Your teacher will have passed on to you a copy of a maths revision guide (if not check with them and get one)

2. You all have access to MyMaths for independent study and support (again ask your teacher for advice on how to use this resource of you are not sure)

3. One past paper will be given to you each week to complete at home and bring back to the requested review lesson

4. Other past papers and practice exam booklets with answers are on the school Fronter site - Login on the right hand side of this page (your login name should have been passed onto you by your VMG tutor on the sticker you stuck on the front of your planner and the password was sent to you on the school email {if you cannot find this email then please see Mr Marshall in the ICT Technicians office for it}).  These papers can be downloaded at home or in school for you to use for self practice

5. All maths staff are offering extra classes each week, if you cannot make the night of your teacher all the other teachers can be asked if you could join their night

6. Friends, do not under estimate the power of revising together with a small group of friends, you are not alone in your anxiety to do well in exams, working together will make it easier.

7. PLAN - It is essential that you use the Self Assessment Sheets for your unit exam to aid your planning.  You will find it helps a lot if you identify your weaker topics and actually right down at what time and date will you revise the topic to improve your ability on it.

If there is some extra advice that I can give you as an examiner for your exam board it is this:

  • Learn to use your own scientific calculator well, several marks are lost each year by students who borrow a calculator all the time and never remember what buttons do what as they do vary for different makes - BRING IT TO EVERY MATHS LESSON
  • Learn your times tables well, avoid the I can never do them approach, 5-10 minutes practice with a friend / parent / carer each day for a couple of weeks and you will be amazed what you can remember
  • Always check that the answer you want to give is reasonable for the question asked  e.g. 0.3 x 0.2 cannot be 0.6 as x by 0.2 is taking a small part of 0.3 so the answer has to be less than 0.3 so 0.06
  • Learn your formulas and key facts well, knowing these and writing them out every 2-3 days for a couple of weeks will gain you many marks that usually get lost by students - ask your teacher for guidance if you do not know from your self assessment sheet what are the key facts and key formulas to know for your exam.

Good luck and do ask if you are not sure of anything.
